You're right Sex Pistols set the stage, but the Ramones stayed the course.

John Lydon is cool in PiL though! :)

Well, The Ramones have actually been around longer, slightly lol. Both bands evolved in some way from other bands, but as far as with the line-ups we are all familiar with; The Ramones' 1st show was on 30 March, 1974, whereas Sex Pistols' 1st, that included Sid, was on 3 April, 1977. (though there have been some member changes over the years for The Ramones, I won't really take that into consideration since Sex Pistols weren't around very long anyhow) By that time, The Ramones had already toured and had their 1st British concert on 4 July, 1976.
All that aside, I do like both bands. I think The Ramones are a better band in the general sense of the word. Sex Pistols weren't really known for musical ability, especially Sid lol. The lyrics are good, but I think the image and the meaning behind the 'movement' were what made that band more than anything else really. As for The Ramones, they were definately more musically talented. But personally, I don't even think of them as being the same genre. Sex Pistols being more 'punk' and The Ramones more 'pop-punk'. But that's just my opinion. They were more lyrically catchy, so to speak.
So, to answer your question, I think they were both very influential in their own rights, and in their own countries as well. But to me it's like comparing apples and oranges really.

The Ramones

Not sure the Sex Pistols were the founding fathers (The New York Dolls or The Stooges might be more qualified) although they certainly were the original British punks. Both bands adopted the three chord rule, both were born out of desperate economic times, and both were unique in their presentation, but where the Pistols were a band manipulated by their manager, Malcolm McClaren, to shock, The Ramones were far more natural. Just for reference, I prefer the Pistols, but I'm British and remember the horror of the (then) older generation when they first appeared.

The Sex Pistols were the spark, The Ramones were the flame. The Sex Pistols pioneered however they were inexperienced and underexposed, the Ramones had more of a head for business and reached a greater audience.

Sadly many people never even heard the Sex Pistols music until they were disbanded.

The Ramones. Their music is better, and forget about what would or wouldn't exist had it not been for the Sex Pistols. There's a good chance somebody else would've done it because that was the direction music was going at the time.

You forgot about The Velvet Underground, but I'll say Sex Pistols because The Ramones were more "produced.." Sex Pistols were gritty and more original.

I like the Sex Pistols better--

Because I like their band name, and their music kicks ***. I don't really favor the Ramones.
