i use zone alarm and turned off the windows firewall...was that a bad idea? like should i use the windows firewall instead of the zone alarm firewall??

heck no. zonealarm is much more powerful than the standard windows firewall. in fact, windows firewall is regarded as useless for most. it's basically the last resort in case you can't figure out how to download a firewall from the internet.

No, don't use windows firewall. Turn it off. You should only use one firewall. It only protects one way traffic. Keep the ZoneAlarm. Protects inbound and outbound. Execellent firewall!!!

just leave the FIREWALL on it protects your computer from intrusions.
