I've had an ant problem again this year, too. Seems like every year about the same time we get ants. Other than spraying them, and not leaving out food items, or dirty dishes on your counter, be sure you keep the areas around your doorways and steps clear of trash, weeds, etc. Also spray around your doorsteps and around the perimeter of your home. Ant poison granules sprinkled around the perimeter can help too. There are also some ant bait trays on the market. Once you get the problem somewhat under control, put out some of the little bait trays. They've worked for me.

To locate the nest can be time consuming and at best miserable. Place some small sugar in the known area where they are, and watch closely to see if the in fact pick it up and head for home. If they do, just keep tract of where they travel and sooner or later you'll find their nest.
Once found, some simple motor oil and or paint thinner will make them look for better housing.
I have already used gasoline on their nest, and then a match, but only if far enough away from the house, garage or shed.
The only time I even bother ants is when they get into the house, as like most insects, they do serve a good purpose in nature.

Most of these 'remedies' are of no use. Rice or cornmeal will not kill ants. It does not expand and explode in their stomach. That idea came from GRITS an acronym for an insecticide.
Gas and/or motor oil contaminate the soil and are illegal for use in this manner.
The ants are most likely looking for water. You could try placing a bowl in their path and see.
If you use more than one type of insecticide at one time you will get better results.
Spray around all entrances - doors & windows, and at the same time put out combat ant traps. The spary will kill those attempting to enter the house will die and the ones that don't will take the bait back to the nest, ths killing all that remain.
Sometimes the queen is 10 feet - yes 10 feet - under the ground.
Hope this helps

I purchase a few pounds of cayenne pepper every couple months from wholesaleherbs.com or herbalcom.com. I sprinkle it all over my yard, water it in, and it drives those ants to my neighbors yard.

Put little piles of cornmeal around where you see their trails. They'll eat it, but can't digest it, and they will die a slow, agonizing, horrible death. Just what an ant deserves. (Can ya tell I don't like ants?)
