You can grind diamond with materials that are softer - it just takes longer.

For example, you could use aluminum oxide, the second-hardest naturally-occurring mineral (often found in sandpaper).

I was reading about diamonds today and apparently, even though they are amazingly hard to cut etc... they can actually shatter because they have a weak spot in them and thats how they can be cleaved. If they are not carefully cleaved the diamond could shatter. I can't remember what it's called but it's something like a seam? perhaps someone could explain it better?

Diamonds are usually cleaved and then polished. But they can be laser-cut and polished. If cut they are cut with some kind of saw that has diamond pieces in it. I imagine that early diamonds were cut only along cleavage planes and polished until they technology was good enough to allow diamond dust to be impregnated onto tools for cutting.

Remember.....glass will cut glass....so to with diamond....diamond will cut diamond.

They probably didn't cut it at all; they cleaved it. Diamonds will preferentially fracture along specific planes and angles as most single crystals will. You can strike a diamond in such a way that it will break cleanly along one of these planes even though the materials used to deliver the blow are softer than the diamond.

You don't need a cut diamond at all.
Take diamond dust glued to a medium to grind and cut.
