I bought a couple of spirea shrubs today to plant for fall planting. I live in central IL, zone 6 where it is EXTREMELY hot right now. When can I safely transplant them into the ground? Thanks!

It should do ok if you plant it now, but it might be best to wait until it's done with the flowering season, usually by September. Once you do plant it, water it well and often. Make sure it is watered before the first freeze. Come spring, prune it back to as low as 12" to encourage new growth and more flowers. Once the plants are well established, usually about 3 years or so, you'll only need to water them in times of drought.

I think you will enjoy these shrubs not only are they colorful they bloom periodically during the season my are yello with pink clusters of flowers I do think you can plant them any time but you should be careful of the heat and you do need to water them very good the first couple of weeks you can plant them clear into the fall you just need to make sure that they have at least a coupel of weeks in the ground before the first hard frost.Good luck!

They are better off in the ground than in the pot. You can plant them now, but make sure you water them daily for the first couple of weeks and then you can cut back to once a week. Make sure they are not root bound because they will strangle themselves if they are. Loosen the roots so they can spread out in the soil. You don't want them to grow around the root ball.
Good luck.

As soon as it cools down a bit. This is such an unusual summer. It's hard when to know what to do garden wish!

Another thing you could do, is plant it and shade it with something. I use turned over lawn chairs to shade my new plants.
