Earlier today I suddenly got a shooting pain on the left side of my abdomen. I had to stop and brace myself because it hurt so bad. It lasted for about 15 seconds. Now, about 6 hours later, I have mild cramps in my lower abdominal area. What could this be?

Sounds like a lot of gas, but being on the left side could also indicate a problem with your appendix. Think about what you ate and drank. Also monitor the pain. If it gets worse go to the ER. before it ruptures.

Something similiar happened to me, and AFTER I figured out it wasn't a kidney infection by going to the doctor, I found out that my pelvic floor muscles were contracting, causing the pain. If you want immediate relief, lie facedown on your bed, and bring up your knee to your side, and stay in that position for a few minutes. That should help relax the tense muscle. Then, go see a physical therapist (one who is trained to work with the pelvic floor muscles), who will make the problem hopefully go away for good. Make sure you don't have a urinary tract infection though, of course, as that must be treated immediately. For the pelvic floor muscles (these tell the bladder to empty itself/they keep the pee in): you could try stretching them out yourself by buying small, medium, and large vaginal dilators. start with the small one (sterilize it with hot water and soap and LET IT COOL OFF). stick it in for about 10 minutes a day. when you're ready, move on to the medium one, and then the large. also, i've been stretching out my pelvic muscles by inserting my clean, washed thumb (nail forward) fully into my vagina, and pulling it back towards my back/butt. this stretched out the muscles a lot. if the back of me was considered "6 oclock" (with the front of me being "12 oclock"), i also use my muscles to stretch my muscles towards "4:30" and "7:30". also, try kegel exercises. kegel exercises are when you clench your muscles together, like you're stopping yourself from peeing. hold that for ten seconds. then relax. if you want, you can put your CLEAN finger into your vagina, so that you can feel the muscles tighten and then relax. do about twenty kegel exercises a day. if your bladder keeps hurting when you urinate and it's not a UTI, it could be interstitial cystitis.
