What about Sci Fi inspires you? What type of stories/books do you enjoy?
Sci Fi is not always easy. If you develope new worlds, you have a lot of little things to remember and rename, trying to keep the names within the realm of your readers understanding. If you do end of the world, you have to account for this even in a logical way. If you do alien invasion -- well you get the idea.. and like all genre's theres lots of ways to go and lots of worlds to explore. Just do what you like and enjoy the trip.

A common tactic is to take a recent scientific discovery - one that people say "will someday revolutionize" something or other, and then to project what *might* happen if the full potential is realized.
One example: Let me give you a little (simple) semiconductor background 1st. (It starts out boring and dry, but it gets more interesting)
Current computer chips - all of them - are made from what we call transistors. A transistor is nothing more than an electrically operated switch - turn on the power, the switch is "on", turn it off, the switch is "off". The material used is called "semiconductor", and it works much the same as a light switch - except that voltage turns the switch on and off.
Modern day transistors are very small - measured in nanometers. They are also pretty fast. But TI has been able to create a "hall effect" transistor (this was about 20 years ago, but I haven't heard anything about it since). This type of transistor works by causing an electron to jump orbitals (don't worry if you don't know what that means). The important thing is this: Such a transistor can be made from just a few *atoms*, and the time it takes for the switch to turn from off to on is *literally* 0. That's right, *no* seconds. What does this mean?
If we could learn to mass-produce these transistors the way we do semiconductor transistors, computer chips would be 1000 times smaller (literally), they would use 1000 times less energy, and they would operate so quickly that the most involved calculation could be accomplished literally in the blink of an eye.
Imagine a computer more powerful than the most powerful supercomputer that is the size of a wristwatch. Imagine how much such a tiny device - composed of perhaps just a few billion atoms - would cost. Imagine how long such a device would run on a watch battery. Imagine literally everything that you purchase having a computer built-in that is more powerful than any computer that we have today - and the computer is so small, you can't even see it. You could milk an idea like this.
Here's another: Imagine that man develops faster-than-light travel. That means that he's literally faster than light. If you were to travel 1010 light years away, and it took you only 10 years to travel that far, and *then* you looked back at earth with a super-powerful telescope, then you would see what was happening on earth 1000 years ago, because the light would be just reaching your new location. You could see any event that occurred on the lighted side of the planet that happened in the past. If you trained your telescope on the earth during your entire journey, you would have a reverse-movie of the entire last 1000 years. Imagine - you would know who shot JFK - or at least where they were standing, assuming you might not identify them from above. You might find out what happened to Jimmy Hoffa. You might witness the death of Aaron Burr (a mystery). You might witness the sinking of lost gold-laden ships traveling to Europe. If you went far enough, you would witness the building of the Pyramids, the arrival of man, the extinction of the dinosaurs - whatever you wished. Of course, you would not be able to affect any of the events - just view them. Possessors of this knowledge could use it to blackmail politicians or to enlighten human society.
Well, that's all I can think of off the top of my head. If you don't like these, look around on news sites for recent scientific discoveries, and try to imagine what might happen if they reached their full potential.

I've always wondered if there were others that were much bigger than us and see us as we see ants. We travel the freeways like a colony. Every day we follow the the same paths as if there was a scent to follow. Looking down on earth from a higher perspective are we not repetitive? Your story could not be fiction but based on reality. What would happen if this daily routine was disrupted or altered? Wall Street doesn't open...all the street lights turned red at the same time..the hot water in my shower went cold..unlimited possibilities

A lot of the best stories take current trends and imagine where they might end up. For example, advances in technology might take us to the point where we all interact with each other's 3-D avatars and never see real people, take virtual vacations, have virtual families, etc. Future epidemics and environmental degradation might also incline people to stay indoors where it's safe and only interact with the world through technology. But maybe there's a small group of people who want to have real experiences and interact with real people. You could build a story around them finding each other and the experiences they have being unplugged.

fantasy: a million. a.The act or technique of deluding. b. The state of being deluded. 2. A fake concept or opinion: worked decrease than the fantasy that fulfillment became to hand. 3. Psychiatry A fake concept strongly held inspite of invalidating data, noticeably as a symptom of psychological ailment. in the experience that there's no stable data for any deity and finding on what claims are made there is a few invalidating of specific substantially held ideals i could say such ideals are delusional. regrettably, I additionally do no longer think of human beings are constantly very rational beings. we are able to being rational yet in lots of situations at the instant are not. it kind of feels to take artwork and is no longer the default. We nonetheless prefer to respond to primitive emotional pulls regardless of knowledge or documents that could contradict now and back. So i do no longer see it as unavoidably extraordinary. I advise extremely some human beings believed in Zeus in historic Greece, it became time-honored. We in many situations think of fake and delusional regardless of the indisputable fact that. human beings carry a sort of erratically arrived at conclusions in lots of situations. a guy or woman could nicely be extremely rational in lots of factors yet no longer approximately some thing it somewhat is plenty too emotionally making an investment for them, like their making a music ability, how handsome their infants are, or deities and afterlife ideals.

Depends on who your audience is, first of all. Is this for a serious publishing company? Or is this for kids?
PC = Trek to outer space, looking for signs of life, and then encountering an unknown planet, etc.
Kids = Kid Genius going to outer space with friends to search for treasure, etc.
Again, the story you are trying to create has to match the audience...you can't say, to 6 year old kids, that --- ---- is trying to define cold fission, or something...think about who your audience is, first!
Hope this helps!
