The Wall Street Crash of 1929 led to the Depression. Roosevelt's New Deal got the economy back on track again. America's entry into World War 2 after Pearl Harbour finally achieved economic recovery.
The New Deal was the title President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave to the series of programs he initiated between 1933 and 1938 with the goal of providing relief, recovery, and reform (3 Rs) to the people and economy of the United States during the Great Depression.

A major drought hit the heartland of America. This caused major crop failures and collapse of private farms. These farmers fed the U.S. But many of them were deep into the banks pockets and when the crops failed they could not pay their loans back. This coupled with stock market crop speculation led to a disastrous economic picture. So much of the stock market was based on futures and speculation and very little cash actually flowing. The domino effect came into play and all stocks started falling to rock bottom.
This was 10-12 years after WWI.
FDR With his social programs pulled the U.S. up with things like WPA and CCC. This was good until it got out of hand and turned into the welfare state we know today. The real point where the depression ended was when Roosevelt finally found cause to get us involved in WWII in Europe. Then came the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. A war economy is the fastest way to recover.

World War 1 had nothing to do with it, it started with an unexpected stock market crash on October 29, 1929. It pretty much effected the whole world. People kept over advertising, selling too many goods, thinking life was great.

The Roaring 20's led to the Great Depression. Many ppl were enjoying there lives and credit became the new thing. Ppl bought many items on credit and were not able to pay it back. Stock, which were big also was a big one. Ppl bought on margin (just like credit), they paid a portion s of the price but with interest. They hoped the stock would rise then pay off there debt with profits and keep the leftover profits. But with ppl not being able to afford their debts, the economy became very unstable. Ppl started pulling money out and not buying other stock. Others saw this and started panic selling, selling stock shares for mere pennies. The Stock Market crashed on Oct. 29, 1929. When this happened, ppl went to the banks to pull their money out but banks only held so much and they began to fail and closed down, causing many to lose all their money. Farmers then went broke due to low crop prices and the Dust Bowl. The stock market didn't hit rock bottom until several yrs later. Afterwards, FDR came in and came up with the New Deal Policies. Bank Holidays to inspect financial health of banks, Glass-Steagall Banking Act 1933 set up FDIC, realief agencies, and other agencies.

The stock market crash on October 29, 1929 was the catalyst. The mobilization to enter into the war actually helped our economy. That would be World War II, not WWI.

The short answer is over extension in the stock market. People were borrowing money to invest thinking they would make a bunch of money and then pay off their loans. the market dropped and they went belly up and lost everything. People who were millionaires jumped off skyscrapers and many became bums overnight.
Sound like it could happen today?
g-day!
