I usually have strong anxiety when I don't do something that I wanted to. And I don't mean not being able to go to a party. Like, if I wanted to read something on a digital billboard and the billboard changed, I'll get heavy anxiety and it'll bother me for a very long time. Are there any things I can do to suppress this feeling?

Very simply, your mind is having trouble passing and maintaining chemical balances. Medication is the best, quickest and most effective way to control anxiety. Couple that with therapy, to identify the main factors that trigger the anxiety, which affects you physiologically, thereby creating the chemical imbalance. It is a more common ailment than you may realize, and it is treatable. You have to dedicate yourself to increasing your self awareness and exercise the control you have over your reactions to stimuli. You can do it. Good luck to you.

Anxiety can be suppressed for a short period of time, but it will eventually come back with more strength than before. Some medications such as Lorazapam (Ativan) may aleviate some of the uncomforatable feelings associated with your anxiety. You can only defeat your anxiety by finding its root cause and carry out a plan to work on that underlying issue. It is a process and will take some work on your behalf and time. I do not know the level of your anxiety, but you should see a professional. If they want to put you on medication, but not work at healing your underlining root issue, do not submit yourself to their care. There needs to be the right balance of medication and therapy. Unfortunately, many so called professionals will prescribe medication only. This results in increasing dosages of medications, which can be toxic to your body and may produce chemical dependency. Find a professional that caresfor your whole being. Anxiety is a form of worry. From what I know of this condition, you have an oversensitive control issue. I know nothing about your past or you as a person, but I think that maybe some very bad things have happened to you and that you feel helpless. Worrying is your way to perceivve that you have control, yet worry is the complete opposite showing that you have no control. As human beings, we believe that we can control just about every aspect in our lives and the surrounding environment. We cannot even control our emotions, but only manage them and try not to be so reactionary. Trying to supress emotions always lead to stronger emotions that are generally uncomforatable or negative. The same thing applies to our thoughts. Because of our conditioning, which includes everything positive and negative that has happened to us, we are automatically going to think bad thoughts. The only thing that we can do is not dwell on those thoughts and change the channel or focus of those thoughts. Many cases of OCD may be caused by people trying to suppress thoughts and feelings, and we know that the result is negative because the people that have OCD are enslaved to compulsions. There is a great prayer that they say in Alcoholics Anonymous that may give you a little bit of insight.

God, grant me SERENITY to accept the things that I cannot change, and COURAGE to accept the things that I can change, and WISDOM to know the difference.

Here is a passage of Scripture that will give you insight about worry (anxiety):

Matthew 6:25-34

25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? 28 "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

i use relaxation tapes ; very good. breathing exercises, awesome. but if the level of anxiety is really messing you up, you needs some pills and talk to a therapist. I know this is going to elevate your anxiety level but believe me after talking you'll feel better. tip: you don't suppress anxiety. if you suppress it , it gets worse.

I had very bad anxiety at one point, and I managed to cure it by focusing on whatever makes me happy. For example, if i'm worried about something and am having trouble sleeping, I concentrate on good thoughts like wide open fields, rainbows, etc (it may sound a bit weird but it helps me personally!)

I was on medication for years for my anxiety problem. I know it sounds awful but I was able to stop all the meds and lead a normal life by smoking pot everyday.

you cant really suppress it. It's energy that needs to be released somehow. Exercise is a good avenue for that

It sound like that you are more upset that you did not read the billboard in time than anything else. You don't like to miss the "info" on the billboard, you might miss something.?(changes you don't miss anything important)
Why don't you help yourself by learning to read better that will do you a lot of good. When i was young i was nervous to read in front of the class, but when I had reading under control I was fine.try it ,you like it

Deep breathing and relaxation tapes are helpful. You might also try yoga. Another thing you can do is to redirect your thoughts to something more pleasant. Visualize yourself at your favorite vacation spot.
