Depending on where it is being inserted there maybe very little to no pain involved with the process.

In medicine, a catheter is a tube that can be inserted into a body cavity, duct or vessel. Catheters thereby allow drainage or injection of fluids or access by surgical instruments. The process of inserting a catheter is catheterisation. In most uses a catheter is a thin, flexible tube: a "soft" catheter; in some uses, it is a larger, solid tube: a "hard" catheter.

The ancient Greeks created catheters from reeds. "Katheter" originally referred to an instrument that was inserted such as a plug. The word "katheter" in turn came from "kathiemai" meaning "to sound" with a probe. The ancient Greeks inserted a hollow metal tube through the urethra into the bladder to empty it and the tube came to be known as a "katheter."

Placement of a catheter into a particular part of the body may allow:

draining urine from the urinary bladder as in urinary catheterization, e.g., the Foley catheter or even when the urethra is damaged as in suprapubic catheterisation.
drainage of fluid collections, e.g. an abdominal abscess
administration of intravenous fluids, medication or parenteral nutrition
angioplasty, angiography, balloon septostomy, balloon sinuplasty
direct measurement of blood pressure in an artery or vein
direct measurement of intracranial pressure
administration of anaesthetic medication into the epidural space, the subarachnoid space, or around a major nerve bundle such as the brachial plexus
subcutaneous administration of insulin or other medications, with the use of an infusion set and insulin pump

The catheter others have described is called a Foley catheter, used through the urethra to collect urine.
What kind of catheter does your mom want you to get and why?

A catheter is a tube inserted into the body to drain off fluids. Your mom can't make you get one.

A catheter is normally inserted as part of a surgical procedure, although a urinary catheter can be inserted without surgery.

Catheters are dangerous, as they serve as a route for pathogens (bacteria/viruses/fungi) to enter the body.

If you are suffering from frequent urination problems, you need to be examined. A simple urine analysis can identify a bacteria you may have. Are you sexually active?

Urinary tract infections can come from penetration, oral sex, being "fingered", inserting vibrators into the vagina, wearing someone else's clothing, using someone else's towel, etc.

Urinary tract infections can come from poorly prepared foods, and even food allergies. If frequent urination is a problem, talk with your school nurse and ask her for help, if your mom is making a big issue of it.

Until you get help, try drinking lots of cranberry juice. The acid in the juice reduces the population of bacteria. You can also buy at your pharmacy an OTC medication that will be labled "for urinary track relief" or something similar. Good luck.

You usually get a catheter put in when you're laying down in the hospital. It just pees for you. And you can't feel a thing! I promise! :)

A catheter is a tube that goes into your urethra and is attached to a bag that collects your urine. Why would she want you to have one?

I cath myself every four hours. It is just a tube you put into your urethra and it lets urine out.
