How much do you want to spend?

Art is usually a good thing for a silent auction....planters with herbs, something handmade like a piece of pottery.

Are there any limits? (Size, subject?)

You can donate all kinds of things: gift certificates, gift cards, movie tickets, theater tickets, sports tickets.

If you don't want to go that route, you can pick something practical like kitchen things and put them in a basket.

A while back, I donated a bird feeder and bird seed for an auction that benefited the law school where I worked.

Christmas is coming, some stores already have Christmas items in stock (like craft stores). The Hallmark stores already have their new ornaments out on display. You could buy a few of them and include them in a Christmas package....

Just a few ideas.

Get a gift certificate for a spa treatment, a pair of excellent bottles of wine, tickets to a local upcoming show, an artisan item like handcrafted jewelry, a gym membership or sessions with a personal trainer, a sampler basket based on any theme you desire, a salon package(hair, nails, tanning).

Gift certificates are great as long as they are for a 'set'. For instance, if you go to a local photographer and pay for a sitting fee and a photo package, you wouldn't list it for the amount of the gift certificate, you would list it as a sitting fee and photo package. You could even throw in framing if the amount you are supposed to spend is high. Hope this helps!

You can donate just about anything.
A gift certificate to a restaurant.
Books on the best seller list.
Sometimes a business will match your donation.

If you happen to have a skill or expertise offer an hour of your service or several hours. 10 piano lessons, 2 caligraphy lessons, 1 hour consult with a professional ________, 1 month of baby sitting, 1 night of baby sitting.
Remember people want a bargain so if you offer an item they may not offer what it cost you. Something like car detailing you do for them is a treat for them, they don't already have one and don't need to find a place to put it.
