if you dont have a preferred airline, go to, for instance, www.southwest.com and click on their "ding" that will keep a CONSTANT eye out for awesome deals.
most carriers have programs like "ding" and you'll have an awesome deal in no time.
I've personally used SW before, and in one instance, I purchased an online ticket for 117 dollars, and a few days before travel, "ding" had a deal of 79 for the same flight. I called the airline, after verifying that a seat on the way I wanted to travel was available on "ding", and they credited my account the 117, and I used THAT money to cover the costs of the new ticket, with money to use on my next flight.
