Can social network support world peace?

This question, in reality, is a sum of many questions: can Web 2.0 promote real understanding among people? Will people decide to use technology to co-operate? Can automatic translation tools, socila bookmarks, news digging, etc. make communication easier?

A practical testbed for Web 2.0: can a site like http://www.mypacis.com/ , built as open source, integrated and localized social network platform, develop into a tool for peace?

Please reply to this question, your opinion can make a difference in identifying strenghts and weaknesses of Web 2.0 services at the service of peace and freedom.

THANKS!

Thanks for your feedback and support to my question! It is wonderful to see how much people care about world peace.

Sites like MyPacis.com promote peace by linking people and providing free communication tools, in many languages. By lowering barriers to communication, that makes easier to have a dialogue. Of course, at the end of the day, it is up to users to decide what to talk about and how to interact with other people.

I believe peace, democracy, freedom, etc. are choices. They cannot be imposed, but of course people can be informed about it, so they can make their educated choices.

Anything that promotes communication will help world peace. Without communication there can be no understanding. It is misunderstandings that cause the most disagreements and even wars.

Creative question. It just seems impossible to answer it with a list of ideas, as you requested. Even in America we have so many different views about everything, from politics, to religion to what should be priorities of the government. It would seem that there is no way for everyone to be happy, unless everyone gets what they want. Then you expand that to every person in every country, and the equation becomes mind boggling. I would agree that religion is at the root of many many wars, but money is also an issue. However, while I don't practice religion anymore - I think that for many it provides them with a certain "safety" and even (dare I say) sanity. As it's impossible to think of life in any other way. If you take that away, many people would go nuts I fear. Which would be no good. And the only way to live without money is to take many steps back into the days of trade... many wouldn't be capable of this either. Sure there are laws that could change to make things more cohesive and ideas that seem peaceful, many great ideas here. But great ideas, don't necessarily mean they are practical or workable. While no one likes war and death (and least not normal folks), it creates some sort of balance. Like the Lions that fight for their spot among a group of females, we each have to keep our place in society and the world or we could be in danger. There's always crazies out there and we have to be prepared for them. It's quite natural actually. The ebb and flow of life. The bad somehow makes us appreciate the good... the war makes us appreciate the peace... and the chaos of other nations helps us to appreciate our freedom here in America. It may not seem ideal or perfect, but it it what it is. I say the best thing we can do to make the world a better place, is to focus on what we want to make better, and stop focusing on what we don't want. Vote and get involved in our communities and government more! Educate ourselves but at the same time, be more tolerant of others.... and forgive those that have made mistakes that have effected us negatively. If you've made the mistakes, learn from them. Heck, learn from others mistakes so you don't have to make your own. Be positive!

No. Peace requires several factors.

1. A desire to cease hostilities.
2. A desire to stop judging others.
3. A desire to stop seeking revenge for current or past perceptions of injustice.
4. A desire to look at fairness from a different perspective.

Communication is only a tool that is only useful when these desires can be actualized. Technological communication carries the same problems.

1. The desire to be angry, hateful and hostile.
2. The desire to judge the actions and existence of others.
3. The desire to impose an artibitrary judgment of right and wrong.
4. The desire to consider fairness from the agrieved's perspective and not from all perspectives.

yes but having a common world language helps also to unite us as a species and once we're united we can finally find the closest thing to peace possible

but i agree that these are the first few steps
