It is a survival instinct that's as old as humankind. Many predators strangle their prey in one why or another. Getting that last gasp of air without even thinking about it could mean you have extra seconds to escape before you pass out.

It's the reaction time. We get shocked, the brain registers before the body can react. The gasp happens when the body's reaction catches up with the brain's information. It could also be a learned reaction from all those years of watching horror movies!

many times when we are confronted with a strong emotion, usually one that we consider negative, we hold our breath. we dont even realize we do it... untill all of a sudden our body screams for oxigen and we gasp, this sort of shakes us out of the frozen state and makes us start to take action.
in "rebirthing" or "breath integration" treatment, we tell the person being treated (or ourselves) to connect the breath and keep breathing slowly without stopping.
