It will always strengthen the friendship.People have opinions, they are impossible to not have.
If they have them, then they think them to be worth having. If they think so,then it is respectful for you to think so.
You do not need to agree with them;just recognize that it is part of the other persons self-worth.
If you laugh and walk all over the person by making fun of their opinion;then it stands to reason that you think that they are silly.

Hmm...interesting!
I am acutely aware of other peoples opinions in my line of work but I feel very much that others just don't have the same regard for mine. I also try very hard to be very courteous on the road, although this seems to go largely un-appreciated. If I can help some-one out, I feel it is my moral obligation to do so. Whether people notice that or not, no-one has ever said.
Quite frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn! because if you help some-one out and they act upon your advice and, that's good. If they don't...that's up to them.
I am a rock and an Island. I get by quite well without other peoples appreciation because I love what my life is.
Doesn't stop me helping out where necessary, though.

I show people I value their opinion and that makes them feel a lot more at ease with telling me things, opening up to me, and trusting me. This helps in casual relationships, serious relationships, as well as in the workplace.

The main point that Carl Rogers makes in his 1957 and 1959 Necessary and Sufficient Conditions of Therapeutic Personality Change is not necessarily to show empathy but to ensure that the client perceives it. to be in the clients frame of reference as if it were your own but withour loosing the 'as if' quality.

That's pandering to your peers or people you think are your peers. Why should you need to value peoples opinion of you. Respect and honour yourself, its you that matters to you.
