As soon as I turn over, the oil pressure shoots way up to about 80psi (maxed out on gauge). Any ideas on possible problems? Is it safe to drive 15-20 miles to shop with oil pressure maxed out? Also, looks like there is a bad oil leak somewhere, possibly rear main seal?

The pressure sender wire is probably shorted to ground. That will make the gauge peg. If the gauge goes to zero when you unplug the wire, try replacing the sender before you let some Yahoo take the engine apart.

I would suspect a bad oil pressure sending unit or faulty relief valve in the pump.i would rather have too much pressure than not enough, my concern is that is the any unsual sounds from the engine and the level of oil?

sounds like a bad pressure sensor or a stuck bypass valve. any way top off the oil and keep the revs low as you take it to the repair shop.

sounds like the oil sending unit is undesirable. i could do away with sending unit and setting up a stress gage to work out what your oil stress is, then you definately'll understand if the sending unit is undesirable.
