Actually, I do. Here's why. During the time that the United States was getting new comers from Europe during the 1900's, the American population was rising. Of course, Americans at that time were complaining that the immigrants were taking their jobs and there weren't any jobs for themselves. I do admit that was a problem, but here it was still beneficial.
For starters, the population started to increase and with that there had to be more places to live. With that, there were inventions invented during the time, such as telephones and even elevators. With the increase in inventions and population, America went from an agricultural society to an industrial society in the 1900's. And, we are to this day the strongest nation in the world, because of our industrial society.
Not only did this make matters good economically, but so did politically. Immigrants weren't being treated fairly at the time. Americans at the time were angry that the immigrants were taking their jobs that they treated them horrible. They did worse things compared now a days. So, Congress pass laws to give equal chance to immigrants (just like what they did with the African Americans of no discrimination).

A large presence of multilingual citizens is usually a sign that that country consider important (and important to understand) what happens outside its borders. If you understand what is going on outside your country, you will not - for instance - try to arm a faction against the other in some remote central Asia country, hoping that they act in YOUR best interest. And there would be no surprise when another country, freed from a dictator, falls into a civil war that claims many more victims (including foreign citizens and foreign soldiers and 'peacemakers') than the war itself.
Another reason? A country that can understand other countries' statements, laws and media without the filter of a translator will be quicker in gathering information and will not have to rely on second-hand data for its decisions.
