I have a 1996 Cadillac Deville with 81,150 miles. The rest of the car is in great shape. The body has no rust. I have touched up a couple places where the paint was chipped. Now the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on and the message is "Service Transmission". The code from the computer says that the "Input staft speed in the transmission is low". The car shifts okay and there does not seem to be any degradation in operations.
The KBB value of the car in good condition is $3,405.

It has been recommeneded that I go to a local transmission shop. There is an AAMCO shop about 9 miles from here.

SO WHAT DO I DO?

HOW MUCH WILL A TRANSMISSION COST?

DO YOU NORMALLY NEED A NEW ONE?

Thanks

Chances are very high that you do not need a transmission based on your description. The service engine soon light is related to the on board computer (ECM) that monitors the powertrain. The most likely problem is a malfunctioning sensor or switch in the transmission. There will be some cost to correcting this but no where near the cost of a new transmission. The dealer can tell best as they know the cars the best, but conversly there are some great independantly owned shops that are just as qualified.

I would recommend having the car checked out and then you would know the cost, which makes the decision easier.

Hope this helps and good luck.

The transmission is fine. That speed sensor is used by the computer to decide when to shift the transmission. They go bad all the time and cost about $16 and ten minutes to replace.

I would fix it. it should run about $1500-$2000. it would be cheaper than the total of car payments. However, I used to work for caddy and give you fair warning, at about 100,000 miles the headgaskets will pop. this is due to the alumium block and threads. ever Northstar engine i did these threads striped out. the cost was about $3000 other than that and repeated problems with crank sensors and coolant leaks. it is a solid engine.

How old is the fluid. Little maintenance would probably turn that light off.
I would trade it in if I had to replace the transmission...
I hope new fluid and filter will solve the problem, and the chance is big that they would...
Good luck!

You may be over-reactiing, service motor and tranny soon, means just what it says, service. which is essentially a fluid change.
