People who don't should not try to answer. Both processors are dual cores, and the Core 2 Duo is the faster of the two. The first one is better in every aspect except for the smaller monitor.

they are both pretty close other than more hdd space, the pentium d is the same as p4, everyone is so hyped on the core 2, and its just a phrase that sounds more appealing, I am a tech and HP is not one of my choices, they bought out compaq. I am more into high end gateway, 2nd dell, but this is just from woking on the machines, and I deal with many, my preference are the ones I build myself. I am getting redy to put my latest on craigslist for 650.00 cash, I do not ship, But to give you an idea, the tower is a blck coolermaster/wavemaster very sharp, with an asus mother board. pentium d 3.0 ghz pusging1500 mhz and presently has 1. gig ram ddr 2700, mother board will support 4 gig of ram, 250 gig hard drive, graphics card radion 256 9350 radion, 8 usb 2.0 pots ,6 in back and 2 in front, firewire port. 20 inch flat panel matrix dell monitor like new, swivels rises and pivots. wireless labtec or ms keyboard and mouse. operating system presently vista ultimate, windows office 2007 enterprise. pioneer dvd rw/cd rw, nero 7 .5 ultra burning software. I built this approx 1 month old and very fast no probs with vista @ all. it's an awesome system. So my price is firm and I even had a customer offer to buy it the other day and , told him I would give it some thought, but I am ready to build a new one so I will be parting with it soon. what ever your decision good luck! The second one will be faster. If you need a dual core one then the first one.

It depends on what you do with your computer, dual core processors are slower but have more processing power.

For just normal use there is no need for dual core, but if you want to have more than one process running then the dual core is better.

If it were me buying the system I wouldn't buy either, I am not a fan of HP, Dell, or any other major brand. I have found they use cheap components which are very unreliable. As computer prices decline they cut costs by using cheap components to be competitive. Most often major brands allow very little upgrading, and sometimes you must buy their components or they will not work.

I would say the second one as it has many more features plus a 17" monitor.
But, i wiill also like to advice you to but a DELL computer. You will get all the features in HP computer with a bigger monitor plus 4 years of warranty. Here is link to a dell coupons- $350 off a $1000 Dell Inspiron Desktop. This will only cost you around $650. Plus dell is offering free shipping.

As much as i hate HP products, i would say they are pretty even, i think i would choose the first one, if it wasn't for the 15" monitor :(
