It is the life expectancy of the animal that will determine how long it lives. Average life span for a large dog is about 10 years. Average life span for a small dog is about 15 years.

You can influence that by how you care for it. If you had mistreated and not properly fed your hamster, he may have died at 2 1/2 instead of 4 1/2.

Just like with human beings, it's part genetics and part healthy lifestyle. It sounds like you're doing something right! I have a few friends that had their cats live to be 15-plus years, one of them was 21 years! And my hamster lived over 4 years also. It's nice to see that someone is taking good care of their pets. Keep it up!

It seems to me you take very good care of your pets. My betta fish was 4 1/2 years old when it died. You should be proud!

Good Job! You are apparently very good at taking care of pets. You should consider being an animal related job. I think you spent just the right time with them, because if you spend too much time with them you bother them or stress them too much and they... and if you give them not enough so they feel neglected and run away or...

I think you all know what ... is.

Of course. Time, care, medical attention, protection from natural enemies and predators....all of those are factors. Just like people...you take care of them and love them and they usually have good lives.

those are actually average life spans. living care does have a lot to do with it, so does nutrition, vet checkups, exercise and attention

It looks a little above average, but not at all unusual.
