I own a 1995 Saturn SL-1. Recently, the air isn't as cool as it used to be. The faster I travel, the cooler the air is. When I'm at a stop light, the air is luke warm. I figured it's time to recharge the A/C.....

However.....at the same time this happened, the coolant temperature guage often reads HOT! I mean all the way in the red...almost off the charts. I had to turn the heat on to keep it from overheating.....NOT fun when it's 95 degrees outside!

ALSO.....the same day this started happening, the "Service Engine Soon" light is now on all the time.

Could it be my thermostat?

Have your cooling system checked, especially the fan operation.

The cooling system wouldn't affect the A/C because the A/C radiator is in front. A bad fan will make the A/C and engine both run hot at idle because you won't get any air flow through the A/C and engine radiators.
Don't guess about the A/C charge. Get a $10 gauge and read the directions.

you have a 12 year old car. car a/c systems do leak very slowly over time. the rad is also old and tired. if the fan is not working perfectly you will run hot. the thermostat may not open all the way and will run hot.go to a rad shop and have it looked at. it is cheaper than overheating the engine and doing severe damage that can cause expensive damage to the motor and rad. the service engine light will come on when over heated on a saturn. good luck and dont take a chance. its not worth it. the rad cap is on the resevoir it is a closed system

Don't have a mechanic? Time to find one.

your fan aint working . check to see if fans come on when you turn AC on . if not check your fuses. if your fuses are good check to see if you get power to the fans. if you have power your fans are busted
