Wow, you could fill a book with advice on this one. Everyone here has good advice.
But remember, there's two defencemen and each has a general responsibility for his side of the ice. I should be obvious that the winger on your side is your responsibility when he has the puck. If it's the centerman, the closest D takes him, and his partner backs him up, watching for the pass.
Don't run around after multiple players. If you are on a good team, your forwards should be coming back to eliminate attackers, so you shouldn't have to worry about watching more than one open player at a time. Always try to stay between the puck and your net. Also, talk to your D partner before the game about what to do in situations like this. That way you will have a better idea of what your partner will be thinking, so you'll only have to worry about yourself. Communication is a big part of the game.

If I were you, I'd wave my D partner off to cover the far guy. I'd angle out the guy with the puck while staying between him and the middle player. That way, he'll take a bad angle shot or have to try and put the puck through me to get the pass off or go behind the net with the puck and set up a play that way.
He tries the shot, get the rebound.
He tries the pass, No choice but to try and block it. If you get it, the puck is off the boards and out.
He goes behind the net, pick up the middle guy and hope that your D partner is covering the other player. By the time he's set behind the net, your forwards should be back to help you out.

If your partner takes postion between two players and you also take that postion let the goalie make the save but remember to angle the shooter off or let your other partner do that so he doesn't get the best angle. The goalie should make the save. Try to deflect or mess any pass they try to make up. That's your job, just ruin any opportunities for a goal, by letting the goalie take the shooter.

The goalie can deal with the shot, thats what he plays for. Your job is to clear rebounds and to keep the slot free. at the least, you should lift the guy in the slots stick. when they are coming down you should in front and between the centre and a winger, that way you can block a pass or a rush.

Your defensive partner should pick up the player nearest to him on his side of the boards. You should attempt to position yourself between the shooter and the far side of the goal. Don't give the player a clean shot, but the shot should be handled by the goaltender. You need to be there to clean up the rebound if there is one.
Hope that helped.

don't listen to this guy i play hockey on 3 on 2 rush. theres going to be 2 guys on the side and one staying high. most likely you just want to stay in the middle if the guy on the outside has the puck. because if hes on outside he has no good shot and that's a goalies job to save. but if hes smart he Will pass to the high guy and then its your job to take that guy. in other words check him or block shot. lets say say if the outside guy didnt pass the puck he went around the net then it your job to go in front of the net and the other guy to get him

If its a 3 on 2 you both stay in the middle and once they commit to a pass who evers closer to the puck goes to that player the other player goes into the middle and puts his stick in the passing lane blocking off any outlet pass

Well Depending on where they are comming you want to be positioned between two of them, to slow their lane down and to block shots, make sure you dont screen your goalie, your
buddy has gotta cut off the other guys shooting lane and block shots, it could go vice versa also.

You are the single Circle, and the double circles are where your buddy has to be, you job is to block shots and poke the puck away, your partners job is to block shots and cut off that passing lane, you and your partner should discuss a plan about this to know who is going to do what job. Make sure you dont screen your goalie! Oh and the rectangles are the other team lol. And those double circles arent two people, just where your partner has to skate between.
