After you see lightning, count the seconds until you hear thunder and divide by 5 to get the number of miles away the lightning strike was. The speed of sound in air is about 1128 ft/s and a mile is 5280 ft, so it takes about 5 seconds for sound to travel a mile. Light travels so much more quickly (186000 miles per second) that you can completely ignore the time it took the light from the lightning to travel to you.

count quantity the quantity of seconds between once you spot lightning and once you hear thunder. each and each 2nd equals a million kilometre. Eg in case you spot lightning and it takes 5 seconds to take heed to the thunder, then it rather is greater or less 5km away. that's slightly an previous better halves tale yet in my journey it form of feels to be particularly actual.

You cant tell how far away the storm is by counting. Only how far away the lightning bolt has struck. the lightning bolt may be 3miles away and 7 miles up. By counting one one thousand, two one thousand the distance is roughly a mile a second.
