How often should i clean my filters?

i have a 20 gallon and a 5 gallon how often should i clean the filters my bro says every week but im not sure

If we are talking charcoal filters... inside the tank-once a week and seriously think of investing in an over the back filter for the 20 gal it NEEDS it.
