All that is necessary is once a month. Once a week is overkill. It won't hurt, but it is not necessary. Clean your filter in your tank water to keep your bio-filter (good bacteria) in tact and in your tank. There are some great fish tank cleaning articles at http://www.fishtanktutor.com . Hope this helps.

Your tank is plenty too small for 3 goldfish!! you ought to truly have them in a 30 gallon tank (or better). Goldfish can develop somewhat super--better than maximum individuals understand. in case you insist on preserving them in a tank that small, take your filter out and rinse it on a daily basis and thoroughly replace the cartridge each and every 2 weeks. Do a water replace a week. in spite of all of those precautions you will in all probability very quickly purely have a million or 2 fish. to totally answer your question, in case you had a tank that replaced into the right length, you would be wanting to rinse the filter out as quickly as according to week and alter the cartridge as quickly as a month.

Depends on the filters and bioload, but you definitely need to rinse out the filter every week when you do your weekly cleaning. You rinse the filter in the old water that you removed from the tank to preserve the beneficial bacteria that is growing in it. Then, depending on how many fish you have in the tanks, you change your filter once every month to 3 months or so.

Depends on the type of filters... if its a behind the tank filter.. you can get away with rinsing the filters once a week... replacing once a month. If we are talking charcoal filters... inside the tank-once a week and seriously think of investing in an over the back filter for the 20 gal it NEEDS it. Do a partial water change when you change filters also.Good luck

Well the thing is that you need that bacteria for the fish to survive but I use to work at a pet shop and I use to clean the filters every week as well.

Once a week is fine, Remember not to clean them under the tap and to clean them in tank water (put water into a tub/bucket first then squeez out the sponge in the water) this way you are not killing all the good bacteria. You can do it once a week or 2,3,4,5,6 As long as it is done at least once every 6 weeks,

Once a week will kill your beneficial bacteria, so I do it once a month. Replace the foam and carbon, but don't replace the material that the bacteria colonizes on.
