The NASA Insignia is sometimes referred as "meatball", and was designed in 1959 by former NASA employee James Modarelli.
NASA Insignia elements are:
The sphere represents a planet
The stars represent space
The vector represents aeronautics
The orbit represents space travel.

The Nasa seal is something different. According to Nasa,it should never be used together with Nasa insignia. http://home.att.net/~becky.cb/nasasealsmall.gif

The Nasa logo is this one http://www.tucoo.com/logo/logo_eps048/images/NASA.png
and also should never be used together with the insignia according to Nasa.

I know what their red-lettered logo is called. It's just the letters N-A-S-A in red against a white background and is called the "NASA Worm" logo.

If only they spent half as much time devoted to the shuttle design as the insignia maybe people would still be alive today!
