Vacuum problem. Check where the vac lines connect to the control head. It's the easiest place to start.

there only a handful of things it could be, but the obvious answer is something electrical ;)

but perhaps something more precise.. i would say.. a motor that opens and closes the areas the air is to go :O
im no HVAC expert.. but it seems like that, perhaps even the connection of the switch on the back of the panel is loose.. try checking those things out

you have a vacuum leak. look for a black ball under the hood, should be two vacuum lines going to it. one will be engine vacuum the other to the dash. i would start there, i have seen the balls, crack, melt and so on.......

find and replace the vacuum lines that are off or leaking.
