I honestly think that our world is so noisy and chaotic that people just don't notice. I refuse to have an alarm because we can't park near enough to our house to hear it anyway.

Earlier this summer, we heard what we assumed was a car alarm go off shortly after 6 AM one morning. We buried our heads under our pillows and tried to wait it out. Eventually it stopped, only to start up again, this time with a slightly different tone and cadence. I think I even joked to my husband that it was a good thing that guns are illegal in Canada, or I'd be hanging out the window trying to blow the tires out of the offending vehicle.

A while later, we were awakened by the sound of fire truck sirens. Turns out, it was a furniture store on fire just across from us. By the time the fire department got there, there was little they could do but try to contain the fire.

We assumed the alarm was one of this silly, vain car alarms and so we didn't take it seriously. Obviously no one else did either. Maybe car alarms need to be outlawed or strictly regulated -- it's just a car, after all. This fire -- which did sound an alarm that everyone disregarded -- did millions of dollars in damage.

The only thing car alarms are good for is to annoy your neighbors. We live near a Naval Air Station and depending on the weather, the fly right over our neighborhood on the way to the runway...low. One of my neighbors had to disconnect his car alarm because the FA-18's jets would set it off. Car alarms go off in parking lots and parking garages and folks just laugh. I wonder if anyone has actually called the cops because they heard a car alarm.

Possibly because most alarms go off when the car owner is nowhere in sight, and so doesn't hear it. Like when your neighbour goes on holiday for two weeks, and the alarm goes off 3 days before they're due to come back home....

it's simple, the car comes with the alarm, so they loose nothing to leave it on.
they ignore it because they figure that it's probably a false alarm and if someone is trying to steal the car , then he would be frightened by the alarm. so , in the words of Alfred Neuman "what me worry????"
until they find their car gone when they get back.
God bless,

I think some cars have them fitted as standard. It also brings your insurance down.
