Players are put on the bereavement list for personal issues. Like, a family member passing, their wife having a baby, someone close to them is having surgery, etc. It works like the disabled list, so if someone is put on it, the team can call up another player to take the roster spot

A player who is grieving due to the death of a family member or friend can be placed on the bereavement list with league permission. He must stay on the list for at least three days and be activated within ten days. His roster spot can be filled by another player on the 40-man roster.

the people above are partially correct. its when a team is having a problem with a player, usually when the player has a blowout with the coach. For example, Scott Olsen was put on the bereavement list when he was causing problems for the Marlins. look in the dictionary too, it will give a good def. for bereavement

It is the list the players get put on when they leave the team for a couple of days due to a death in the family or if someone in there family is sick.
