PandaSoftware has a good anti-virus/spyware detection program. They have a free online scanner. http://www.pandasecurity.com/usa/homeusers/solutions/activescan/default.htm?track=80383
If it finds something, you can download a free trial version and remove it. Most anti-virus programs now check for spyware.

Anti-Virus programs do not detect all spyware programs, especially if it is a new program. You could install your own keylogger and see if someone with physical access is checking up on you. You can download one here: http://www.download.com/Free-Keylogger/3000-2092_4-10630982.html?tag=lst-0-4

Keep in mind if you have anti-virus installed that it WILL detect this as spyware/virus. They're relatively safe if you control them and since you're installing it, you control it. You may have to have your Anti-Virus software ignore it and disable your anti-virus before you install it. Keep that in mind.

Installing a firewall will give you peace of mind to know that someone is not accessing your computer remotely (over the Internet). You control what programs connect to the Internet and what computers connect to your computer. ZoneAlarm has a free firewall you can use. http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en

You'll get a lot warnings when programs attempt to connect to the Internet. You just have to know what programs are good. Essentially, if you did not run run a program right before you get a warning, you has no business connecting.

Hope this helps!
