I always get confused when people talk about four wheel drive, all wheel drive, 4x4s, and 4x2s. Whats the diffrence between them all? And what do the numbers stand for in "4x4" and "4x2?"

4x2=4 wheels, two of them driving wheels. the vast majority of vehicles fall into this catagory

4x4=4 wheel drive=all four wheels transmit power to the road in equal amounts. that is to say that 50% of the engine's power goes to each drive axle when in 4 wheel drive mode. 4 wheel drives come in two basic models, full time and part time. full time means just that, both drive axles transmit power all the time. part time 4 wheel drive means you can run the power to one axle or both depending on where you shift the transfer case.

awd=all wheel drive. similar to a 4 wheel drive vehicle except that each wheel can have a different amount of power at any one time, unlike the 4 wheel drive.

in a full time 4x4 and in awd cars, the transfer case has a differential built in to prevent gear binding, that can break gears and/or axles.

4x2 = just 2 wheels driving, usually the rears

4x4 = all 4 wheels are driving but not good for street as the fronts usually turn a little faster and its harder to steer

AWD = all wheel drive, all 4 wheels work together, my jeep is AWD but i have a low and hi range i just cant take it out of 4WD

4WD = just 4 wheel drive

4x2 is a rear wheel drive truck. fwd is a front only transaxle rwd has a ujoint at the tailshaft of the trans and goes straight to the rear axle AWD is usually a modified FWD, you cannot shift from rear to four, or high to low AWD IS NOT 4X4!!!!! 4X4 MUST have a Transfer case that shifts from rear wheel high gear to 4 wheel high gear to 4 wheel low gear. AWD IS NOT 4X4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
