In school we were taught how to speed read. Essentially what you are doing is only reading the middle part of the page. You don't need to read the three or so words at the beginning or end because you will pick it up in your peripheral vision and the mind will string it together. Does that make sense? It is kind of hard to explain in words.
It works, but I found that I didn't comprehend as much. It might work for you, but I recommend just reading more. In the end it really doesn't matter how fast you read. Just enjoy the book.
Hope this helps.

I admit that I am slightly above average in reading speed, an comprehend more than most. That being said, there is a system, known as speed reading, which guarantees to increase your reading speed to at least double what a plodder like me does, and also claims to increase your comprehension.
This is a well-known technique, with significant results for many people. I tried to teach myself (with a book) and failed miserably. Unusual, since I've become very good at learning from books (rather than teachers), but this I failed at.
Nevertheless, I still believe that the technique has merit, simply because of all the people who *have* managed to master it. Perhaps it requires a live instructor, with interaction, to "take".
Assuming that you are still living at home, find a web site about speed reading. Inform your parents of the benefits it will provide your education and the boost that it will give your grades. Then ask them to spring for a course at the local Community College or where ever you can find one.
If you're on your own, this one course is likely not beyond your means. I think that you would find it highly worthwhile.
I managed to get a B.S. in Physics with plodding, and my comprehension is so good, I'm not over-enthusiastic about an "upgrade". But this seems like it would be right up your alley.
I hope this helps.

practice makes perfect and honestly i think the best way to increase your speed is to read out loud. after a while you'll be able to read silently much more quickly. also try easier books. some books are quite difficult to read in general and no matter how fast you read they are written with such complexity that it's just slow going.
good luck!

As they say, practice, practice, practice! Reading is just like any skill--the more you do it the easier it will become. That's easy to say and can't be true for everyone--there are few things in this life that will or can apply to every individual. In my household, I read "fast", as does my stepdaughter, but my husband reads considerably more slowly. Though I can't say it's a bad thing. He seems to grasp much more from the story the first time through. I read fast out of necessity--5 kids, a job and a writing career--when I read there's not much time to devote to it.

Your question should not be how can i be faster but how can I read better. The better you read the faster you'll get.
