I agree, but I think the suffering far outweighs the overcoming. Most people die before they can truly overcome the plight in their lives. Most people who are born poor die poor. And for every person whose cancer goes into a remarkable remission, there are many more people whose cancer accelerates to take their life.

"There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why... I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?" Robert F. Kennedy
When I was at a Bible study on vacation this past week, someone asked how people could not fall into despair over all the bad things that they see in the world. I said that some people focus only on the bad things that happen to them in life, but in history and in anyone's life there are usually many good things that happen. Human beings have created great horrors, but humans have also created great wonders. Difficulties in life provide opportunities to learn and they present challenges that we can overcome. Few things worthwhile have come about without trial, tribulation, and hard work.

According to the Buddha, we suffer because of our desires and if we could overcome them we would have no suffering.
While this may sound peaceful or inspirational on both the Buddhist and Keller quotes, there is a deeper meaning:
You cannot alleviate the suffering you have by lack of action. You have to do so through your own behavior, but you have to employ foresight that will allow you to envision what will be the ultimate consequence of your actions.
If you are hungry you can pick up a piece of bread and eat it, and if you are sexually aroused you can initiate sex with someone to alleviate that. However, taking someone else's bread is stealing and forcing someone against their will is rape. So in the end, the statements do not imply peace and inspiration but work and mindfulness.
However, in the end, that truly is more satisfying.

I seems as if there is more suffering because of all the bad things that happen. But there is a lot of overcoming because people will always pull through. If not, the world would fall.

I absolutely agree. If you only allow yourself to see the good in the world, then that will become your reality. You might think "oh thats dangerous to do in this crazy world" But, your opinion of a dangerous world is what is going to make the world dangerous for you. Ask optimistic people, who have everything go their way, what they think of the world, and they will tell you that is absolutely wonderful. Bad things simply can't happen to them b/c they don't believe in there existence.

Is the glass of water half full or half empty, it all depend on you and you alone. Nobody can live your life for you, think positive and make the best out of what you got...That's all we can do..

How can you disagree with a woman who was both blind and deaf but yet accomplished so much? And so long before all the programs for people with disabilities we have today. Our challenge is to learn from the example of people like her and find ways to help others help themselves.
