Example, lets say we're in space. And, instead of going down to earth, we try and go under it.

Where will that take us?

(Thanks for your input).

Huh? Under the atmosphere is the earth.
If I am thinking right, you mean, under the south pole? That would be outer space.

Get UP and DOWN, and BOTTOM and TOP out of your mind when thinking about space. They are Earthly concepts, because gravity pulls us down, and up is the opposite direction.

The Earth is a ball. Pick up a plain ball, and say what is the top or bottom - there isn't a top or bottom, is there.

The only reason we think of the north pole being on the top and south on the bottom is that all civilisation started in the north. Maps were drawn with the North at the top. That is all.

If all civilisation had started in Australia, we would view maps of the world the other way up.

There is no UNDER the Earth or OVER the Earth from a space perspective. On Earth, UNDER, is under our feet, where the moles live and the miners dig. bUt they just burrow into the ball that is Earth.

It's not difficult if you hold a ball at arms length and imagine that is Earth floating in space.

PS Please ignore that Mercury guy's answer. It is absolute garbage.

The magnetic poles of the Earth do swing, but nobody knows when, and nobody knows how quickly or slowly it takes place. Life has survived many magnetic pole reversals over millions of years, why would this idiot think it will all go belly up in 500 years.

Jeez, so much garbage is spilled on the internet.

under the atmosphere = ground/water = under the water and the ground = a core of molten metals, spinning and churning.

causing a magnetic field to circle the earth and deflect dangerous charged particles from the sun.

soon (500 years maybe) this field will automatically switch polarity and life will become "challenging" during the switch

if the core cools and stops moving we loose the field and the atmosphere will be blown away by the sun.

earth would be as barren as mars after that.

Down is the direction gravity pulls you. For Earth, that is toward the center of the globe. So basically, under the air is the ground. And the ground is the round globe. And down is toward the center of the globe. It just doesn't seem that way to us standing on the surface of the globe, because the globe is so big that we can't see enough of it at one time to see that is is not flat.
