I would be pretty concerned with a fever that high in an infant especially since it's been going on for a few days. I would suspect that there could be some sort of an infection that needs an antibiotic. If it were my child, I would not be satisfied with that diagnosis. As far as the sores go, cold water is the only thing I can think of that could numb the areas. Good luck and don't forget that you're the expert and if you think there's something else going on, by all means get another opinion.

Nope, not going to tell you to call the doctor, the little guy doesn't sound sick. Could be teething, at 4 months they can start solid foods so is not unheard of at that age. They quite often get irritable when they are teething, and get red patches from the drooling and patches on their cheeks too. Have you got baby paracetamol (if you are into that)? Or some Bonjela (soothing ointment for gums)? Babies are fickle creatures at times when it comes to waking. If you have checked everything else - hunger, wetness, soiling, burping etc, and there is nothing else to worry about, then settle him down again, turn out the light and back to bed you go. And hopefully asleep he will go. If not, perhaps consult one of those baby sleep books - the Baby Whisperer may be of assistance. Good luck, I must say I am jealous of the 6-8 hour sleep thing you had - my little guy never slept well till he was 3, however now that he's nine, we can hardly wake him!

A normal rectal temperature is 97-100. So, 101 is a sign he isn't feeling well. 102-103 is a little more alarming.
To cool him down, give rubbing alcohol bath and the tylenol.
If he remains at 102-103 for rectal temp., go to acute care or ER.

To drink: Distilled water or a non-acid juice (because of mouth sores). No orange, pineapple, etc.. juice. Apple juice would be OK if not lots of it - - too much could cause gas & stomach cramps.

If the doctor at the ER didn't give you antibiotics and you are concerned. Seek a second opinion. I am far from a "go to the doctor for every little thing" kinda person. But that is a high fever, and if it continues or rises your son may have a febrile seizure. And believe me it will scare you. I reccomend calling your regular pediatrician or going to an after hours clinic (not necessarily the ER)

"cold sores" are Herpes Simplex A. If your doctor truely believes that is what the child has then you have a serious problem.

I suggest you get a second opinion immediately. An 8 month old really should just be getting breastmilk or formula. Nothing is going to relieve the irritation.

cold sores? sounds like a quack doctor. could be strep or scarlet fever. does he have a rash? get a second opinion. sounds like he needs antibiotics. -- some babies like coolness to soothe the throat, some like warmth. just gotta figure out which he likes. -- btw, a fever of 103 is NOT unusual for little babies. their temps tend to skyrocket more so than ours. My ped says only worry if it gets over 105 and DO NOT put baby in a cold bath!

Any fever that high for that long in a child is fluid loss and can actually cause dehydration and more fever problems. Your son needs medical attention if a fever is that high and lasts longer than a 24 hour period. Take him to the doctor.

Me I would take him to get another opinion. Cause that happened to my 7 yr old when he was 8 months old the er here told me it was cold sores also but it turned out to be some type of viral infection I can't remember the scientific name but its nick name is hand foot mouth disease its not life threatening but very uncomfortable for the baby. So please take him to see another Dr.

A high fever like that is dangerous anything above 103 can cause permanant damage. If it were my son, I'd have him under the best care possible, but I'm a freak...Praying for ya
