When people die, it is said that the soul is released from the body and it flows freely, but then isn't there a possibility that the soul isn't even in the body in the first place? I'm curious to hear what other people think.

Let's define the soul as the part of your mind that survives the death of your brain.

Now some people believe this is a cohesive spiritual being that departs the body at death.
Great concept, but highly speculative. It’s much like believing your data can survive a meltdown of your hard drive.

So does your ‘data’ join the great database in the sky?
Do your files and programs reintegrate into the new computers being born everyday?
Be nice if it did, but I wouldn’t bet money on it.

Ah…but there is part of our self we know survives.
Children hear the advice of long dead parents.
We often know what absent friends would say.
The living are surrounded by the voices of the dead.
For better or worse, our words and actions echo through time.

That soul isn’t in your body.

You create it in those you touch, every day.

The Bible says that when man was created god blew into him the breath of life and then the man became a living soul.
It didn't say that a soul was put into him.
Notice also that the bible says that a soul that is sinning will die, which is opposite to the idea of an immortal soul that many religions teach.

So the answer is , the soul isn't released from the body when it dies , and doesn't go anywhere as thr soul is not a separate entity.

Well I am a student of science so lets look at this from a scientists point of view.
A soul is kind of energy that drive your body and mind (mainly mind.) As a physics rule an energy source must be connected in some way from a machine for machine to work.

So a soul must be in body of human. When human body mind stops working, (i.e. human is dead.) the energy leaves body. But it doesnt destry cause energy cant be destroyed but its form can be changed.

Both in your question and ' b c ' in her answer above, come close to an on-point grasp and step, or leap...

Yours summons an arcane answer, at least an esoterical one perhaps better addressed in the realm of Mantic arts and science, for which there is no category on Yahoo Answers; but is a question that yields what will or does come-off as a far-fetched response at the very least. But then, yours asks of things, the 'Far Country.'

But this millennium entreats that it is high time that expansion ensues in what we are to envision and peer into about life -- beyond that of mere existence as known on Earth and in this one physical universe.

In short, -- both in and out of the body is the case, moreover, Soul may have charge of many points of compass or bearing-- say, than would be conceivable or imaginable or accepted otherwise -- for Soul, the OverSoul, is at a central locus, as it so needs, which has -- well above time and space and energy and matter -- accorded its charter and course and thus carries so not uncommonly.

Especially is this true of those who work from very high levels of merit, which state does or can underpin and operate many bodies simultaneously -- ah!...the brilliant economist Soul is for sake of learning, experiencing, and unfolding in the untold numbers of universes, heavens, and worlds. By this It does gather from many parts, by many, say Satellites or holograms of Itself, so as to gather tremendous experience and knowledge first hand, which is most economical -- don't you agree?

[The] Soul is a mighty being, inconceivably powerful and possessed of limitless potentials and prospective to wield of necessity, freedom, and Will -- both "Free" and Divine.

One is already what he or she is, and all else are possessives of It yet nothing possesses It, which is to say, there is not "my soul" but only Soul saying or having "my mind", "my body", and so on... Each and more are possessions that belong to It or is, say, 'leased' 'by' Soul Itself as aligned with Itself and Existence.

the soul is the existence of power in the body, when we die that power goes away and we are left as nothing but a withered husk of a shell...
