Volatile memory is memory that loses its data when it loses power. RAM memory in PC's is an example; when the PC is shut down the contents of RAM are lost.

Non-volatile memory is data storage that remains intact when it loses power. Hard disk drives, tape cartridges, CD's, DVD's, and flash RAM are examples; when their power source is shut down they retain their data. The optical disks retain it because the data is physically etched onto the plastic with lasers; the discs and tapes carry the data on magnetically charged surfaces.
