Assuming a standard transmission, leave in in first or reverse, and apply the parking brake.

For an automatic, leave it in park and apply the parking brake.

If it's uphill, turn the tires away from the curb, if downhill, toward the curb.

You don't have to do this in any manual car, but it is a really good idea. When you leave it in gear it acts as a second safety catch to keep you car from rolling away. When an automatic is put in park it keeps it from rolling away, this is the same as leaving your car in gear. If your e-brake is getting weak, which they do, or something else happens to disengage it, then your car will start rolling down the street. This can kill someone. Especially kids. This is why its always good to have a backup. How hard is it to leave it in gear? Actually it was in gear when you stopped so just leave it there. Unless you shift to neutral every time you stop(which is also stupid.) What is the advantage to putting it in neutral? None.

It is better to keep your car parked in first gear with out the e-brake because your transmission is working like a parking brake. If you leave it in neutral with the e-brake off, theres nothing to hold your car in place and you will have a run away car. The best thing to do is to leave your car parked in first gear with the e-brake on. This will give you double protection from your car rolling down the street, especially on a steep hill.

Always park the car with it in gear, and first gear or reverse is the best. Also, always use the E-brake too. You can never be too safe.

As long as both work, it doesn't matter which one you use. If I park my vehicle up or down hill, I would use them both for peace of mind.
