The easiest and most popular method is to solve the cube one "layer" at a time. The first layer should come easily, however, from there you need to know some 5 algorithms to finish. It's a matter of memorization after that.

There are a few steps in the layer method:
1) Solve the 1st layer cross
2) Solve the 1st layer corners
3) Solve the 2nd layer sides
4) Solve the 3rd layer cross
5) Position 3rd layer corners
6) Use the finishing algorithm

You'll need quite a bit of patience to figure out everything by yourself. Set aside some 2-3 hours to first finish the cube (learning to read diagrams and notation takes time), then about an hour of practice before you can memorize everything. Definitely enlist the help of a friend if you know one; it will make the process much faster.

You'll be able to solve the cube under 3 minutes once you are proficient with the beginners layer method. Memorize a few more algorithms and more practice will easily cut your time to under a minute.

On the bright side, the Rubiks Cube is a great way to impress anyone watching. There are dozens of websites out there that teach the beginners layer method; I'll leave it to you to find the one that best suits you.

EDIT: I highly, highly don't recommend the website posted above. It will make sense only to those who have mastered the layer method. Instead, try http://jeays.net/rubiks.htm or look for another.

there are a few ways to solve a rubux cube, and i'll attempt to explain one way.

the most popular way is probably the 'layering' method.
the name is almost self explanitory. the first step is to solve the first face, and match the pieces match the sides to the corresponding middle pieces in the second layer.

the second layer is pretty easy. you have to get edges in place. there is an algorithm for this, you can probably find this somewhere on the internet.

after you've finished 2/3 layers of the cube turn the cube so it faces the last side.

the third layer is the hardest one to finish.
the way i do it, is i make a 'cross shape on the bottom. i position one corner so that it matches the edges and the rest from there are all algorithms. again, i recommend you consult the internet for these.

sry, i know it wasn't that much help. i can't really show you anything without some kind of diagram >.< .. i share your pain, rubix cubes were a pain to solve.

Try Google or Wikipedia. I got a solution crib sheet many years ago, but it runs two pages and is much too long to provide here.
