I have a rather new timing light and know how to use it on my Toyota Truck, but never understood what the Advance dial is used for. I just leave it on 0, when using it.

a regular timing light will flash at the same rate as the plug signal. if you specs. say 10 degrees BTDC @ 2000 rpms, your mark will show at 10 degrees if the timing is correct. the dial will be set the flash to where instead of 10 degrees on the scale, but 0 degrees. It is easier to see the 0 mark, than the other markings.

Allows you to set the timing from the dial and then set by the "0" timing mark, as sometimes it easier to see this mark with the light. If you have a new light is should have come with instructions.

It helps when you want to set the timing to an advanced setting. If you want an initial advance of 7 degrees BTDC, then dial in the 7 degrees on the advance and then adjust the timing to be exactly zero degrees. Then you will have the 7 degrees that you want.
