The normal stuff. Jumper cables, water, a little compressor, work gloves, a few tools. But let me regale you all with a true story. My brother in law lost his leg in an accident. He has a full-length prosthetic leg, and he gets it replaced from time to time as they wear out or break, and he keeps an old one as a spare. He had it in the trunk of his car with a sock and a shoe on it. Long story short, he traded the car in and forgot that there was his perfectly realistic-looking spare prosthetic leg in the trunk, complete with a sock and shoe on it, and when the dealer opened the trunk after he left, it about scared the crap out of him.

An emergency car kit, which has tools to fix the car; a sleeping bag and backpack with camping and general emergency supplies; marine rope; shovels and ice melt for winter - all that is in my trunk, but I'll be adding food and water soon. In the cabin of the car I have a cell phone, first aid kit, multi-tool, flashlight, and a few other supplies.
If you are wanting to build an emergency kit, you can get the tool sets at some auto supply or general merchandisers, and for general emergency kits you can find packages online like at www.nitro-pak.com. Be prepared for anything, because you sure can't rely on anyone else to be prepared to help you.

It varies as seasons change. In the summer, I carry a first aid kit, jumper cables, flash light, tire gauge, paper towels and a bottle of windex to clean the inside of the windows. (If I am going on a long trip and doing highway driving).
In the winter, I add an army blanket, windshield scraper, gloves.
