By the very definition of purpose, your question requires a Creator/God. Purpose answers questions such as, "why was I put here on earth" and "what was I meant to do". Here is what one atheist philosopher had to say about purpose:
“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell (20th century philosopher, mathematician and Nobel Laureate)
Obviously we can't invent our own purpose because we didn't create ourselves.
But many people don't mean real purpose, they just want a good feeling so they invent something that makes them feel good about themselves and it gives them a good feeling.
So if we think there is no God, then we have no real purpose but if we do accept the idea of God, that changes everything. The "ultimate" you speak of is not directly our purpose but rather the ultimate is God. Certainly seeking God would be vastly more important than seeking our purpose because when we find God we also find purpose.

To use the gifts god has given you in a way that not only make you feel complete, but that also contribute to other persons purposes. If you are not using these 'gifts' then you will have bad luck in your life until you become aware of possible gift usages...or at least try and give it some thought. The purpose of everyone's lives are completely interconnected, and only when you die will you see all of these linkages.

The purpose is to live it without worrying about the purpose of it. That's because if you ask 10 different people you will get 10 different answers. (See below)

you know when the wind rushes through your hair or when you hear some music that makes you shiver?
Not to be greedy & grab the biggest piece, but instead to seek the most enjoyable piece, that is the purpose of life.

A test of your soul!, will you be a good person? or a bad one? will you help others when your in a position to assist? are you kind? are you respectful to your family? it's all a test so you can show the apposite place for you to spend in the afterlife, & of course believing in God by having faith in him without not believing in him just because you can't actually see him.
