In the Harry Potter books, the Weasley's are always worrying about how to pay for school supplies, right? But they never say anything about tuition cost. In fact, paying for the actual schooling and housing never comes up anywhere. Are we just supposed to assume that tuition at Hogwarts is free?

I remember in one of the books Dumbledore said somthing to Tom Riddle that the school had a fund to help out students in need. When Dumbledore had told Tom that he could come to school there Tom said he had no money and Dumbledore told him the school had a fund to help out students that didn't have a means to pay. Maybe the Weasleys got help from the school or maybe they got to go for free because their father worked for the ministry...not sure. But, since the Weasleys were friends with Dumbledore I'm sure that he found a way for their kids to attend school their no matter what.

Hi!
Good question :)

As a matter of fact, I think you're right. Howgwarts its a free school.
It's like a Public Highschool, if you may. Which would be actually accurate to say, considering that it seems to be the only school in existence in England for quite a large Wizard population.
Of course, the tuition is the only free thing. The books, uniforms and wands (etc) as we know, are for students and their families to take care of.
I'd think Wizards pay taxes (really... they have a Ministery, don't they?!) so... a part of this money, and MAGIC helps to keeps the school up (money because the teachers gota save, right?!)

Goodluck!

Maybe one of the reasons they have to worry about buying school supplies secondhand is because they have to pay tuition costs? I think [but am too lazy to get my book and look it up] that Harry asks Hagrid in the first book, and later Tom Riddle asks Dumbledore, about tuition costs and how they have no money. I believe it's Dumbeldore that tells Tom there is a fund for students who cannot afford tuition.

I'd guess so. The question of tuition did not come up anywhere in the book so we could assume it's free. Even the housing cost was not mentioned since they have House-Elves whom they don't pay with salaries.

I think that attending Hogwarts itself is free. The only things that the students buy are books, uniforms and supplies.
The house elves do all the cleaning, cooking etc. and they dont get paid and I think that the teachers (and Filch!) are paid for by the ministry, why else would the Ministry have such influence over who gets hired and fired?

I think it is for the Weasley's. Remember in book 6 when Dumbledore told Tom that there was a fund. The Weasley's most likely have that.

I assumed that attendance to Hogwart is by invitation only and is free to those invited, after all its not a traditional education.

yes. If you are a wizard person, you need the education, so they feel that they should provide it to try to keep the wizarding world safe and evil free.
