I changed the oil and filter and plugs, it ran perfect, then about 30 miles down it started knocking real bad and lost power, i flushed the whole system and it still knocks on the right side of the engine if your standing in front of it, this is why i think its a rod.

If you ran it out of oil, you don't just replace one rod. Every bearing in the engine could be damaged. You'd be fixing it forever. If you threw a rod, you need a new engine.

It depends on how many miles are on the engine, but my suggestion to you is this, find a junkyard and ask how much it'd be to buy the same engine from a wreck with low miles. Get a warranty. It will be cheaper, and you could probably change the engines out with 2 or 3 of your friends. I don't see how it would go from running perfectly fine to busting a rod though, because the engine would not run at all. But if its making a knocking, the bottom end is probably letting go, maybe a timing belt/chain? Find out the cost of a used engine and talk to a dealer/local shop about replacing just a timing chain or a rod, they'll tell you the same thing, its cheaper to go with a used motor!

If really a rod bearing it means the engine is going. Hardly any shop will just fix one rod as the crank shaft is probably damaged. what a good shop will recommend is an engine replacement. A good rebuild can cost about $3,000 a factory crate engine about 1,000$ more than a rebuilt or a low mileage used one from a wrecking yard, for about $500 -$800 plus installation.

more than the cost of just buying some other car that doesn't need any work and runs????? I'd recommend what I always drive, but don't want there to be a major run on the 3-cylinder Geo Metro's!!!
