Most of them had no experience, and poor training, but some had had some experience in North Africa & Sicily. the airborne forces were inexperienced, but pretty well trained - although even they hadn't been taught much about how to deal with enemy armour.

Some of the Canadians had a little combat experience, but the only true veterans in the landings were British - in particular the 7th Armoured Division.

No, Most of the US Army at Normandy had no combat experience. The divisions with experience were engaged in the North Africa and Italy campaigns.

The Big Red one fought in N. Africa and Sicily prior to the Normandy invasion.

yes from fighting in North Africa and Italy.
Not at all sure of the statistics but I would guess around a 50/50 split between green troops and combat vets.

My dad had none when he landed with the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach;. I don't know about the other guys, though.
