Whether we accept that life began with the first microscopic animals\plants or we believe that GOD created this realm, we must clear that life is... well it is a bit confusing thing. It exist, but why? It is theorized that life was born accidentally. And this accident was trying to protect itself, so creatures began to change, develop and conquer other races. This is what we call EVOLUTION.

Life is for life itself. The keyword here is SURVIVAL. We live to survive as long as we can. Survival has many forms.

1. The survival of the person. (our body)
2. The survival of the race. (sexuality)
3. The survival of a group or community. (society rules)
4. The survival of human spirit and culture. (fine arts, culture)

An other opinion claims that we are here to find a reason to stay here. That means that we seek our own path. Some say that we are only here to find the ultimate evolutionary way to ascend, to leave this plane of existence and continue our lives on an other plane as pure energy. An other viewpoint claims that we are here to seek knowledge and understanding above all. Religious doctrines claim that we are here to please an entity called GOD or to find our own peace, ascend (e.g. reach Nirvana).

So, the question can be answered from different viewpoints. It is your responsibility to choose and accept one as TRUTH. Here is mine:

The meaning of life is SURVIVAL. To ensure our very existence as long as we can. And considering the fact that we will eventually die on a natural way, our most important goal is to propagate and ensure the survival of the race. Because SURVIVAL is the highest law. But you can also choose to ensure your own survival instead through ascension. Of course only if you allow yourself to believe in such things.

In either case, the most important is to maintain our very existence as long as possible. You are searching for an answer that is encoded into your DNA. The ancient power that motivated living beings to take actions in order to SURVIVE. Survival and Replication. Methods that even the most basic lifeforms use to live their life. Creating a nice story around this about the 'core of life' or the 'meaning of our existence' is nothing more then using an other packaging with a different color.

The meaning of life is three things:

1) First is to understand that there is a spirit world and not just a physical existence.

2) Second is that although we may not sense it, what we do greatly affects other people.

3) Third is that love, including forgiveness, is very important while we are here.

This question has been asked so many times it has become cheap - I mean the question, putting the question, not the meaning of life itself. I feel cheap myself having bothered even this much with it.

Hasn"t running down the long list of answers given not helped at all?

We were created to have a personal relationship with the creator of heaven and earth our Lord Jesus Christ. He gave us free will to choose him or not. Anyone can try to fill his heart with anything that "feels good" but is only fleeting and temporary. It is at the moment that he/she accepts Jesus Christ as his/her personal Lord and savior and repents of sin, your friend will NEVER find TRUE peace and happiness.
"You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." Jeremiah 29:13
For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 1 Peter 3:18
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even through he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe in this?" John 11:25-26
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6
"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:32
O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. Psalm 139:1-4
"Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4
