I had the same problem so I went to my doctor and this is what he told me:
1/ is your bedroom dark? I mean properly dark
2/ do you drink booze, tea or coffee? Don't drink any of these for at least 4 hours before you go to bed.
3/ are you exercising late? same goes for exercise, make sure you're finished at least 4 hours before bed
4/ do you watch tv or read before sleeping? again, doc said bedrooms are for sleeping in, not tv or reading so don't.

if you follow this routine and are still having problems ( and I mean give them a go for at least 4 weeks) go see your doctor. You need to go to bed at 10 to get up for 7, and even if you are not asleep, you are resting your body as it is lay down.

Good luck!

You know your own body and what it needs to function but, with all do respects, you don't know your own mind. The mind does not necessarily mature at the same pace as the body.
Therefore you need to work on your mind, but what I suggest will be controversial.
When your mind goes into overdrive with the lights out, you need to quiet your mind.
There are a few different ways you can do this.
If you are Irish, as your name suggests, and Catholic, you can pray the Rosary. You will have a tremendous advantage if you truly believe you are communicating with God and he is on your side.
This works. But don't just try it once. Make it an integral part of your day. Prayer should be a priority and if successful, it will lead you in new directions.
If you are not a believer, then I suggest you try meditation. You need to learn how to shut your eyes and control your raging mind.
Please note the strong, impassioned words you have used in your question: terrible, exhausted, exhausted (a second time), hate, tired, overdrive.
These are not the words you want to be using when describing yourself. Your current lifestyle is physically too active and mentally in hibernation.

Simple, you may have a sleep disorder which requires medical attention. In these days and ages this is a quiet common. Myself,I have a sleep disorder that dates back to my early childhood and never caught up on the sleep I needed until after I survived a heart at tact.when released form the hospital I slept about eighteen to twenty hours a day. I am on medication for this now and lead a fairly normal life. Good luck and God bless!!

Here's a great website that covers this topic. It's an different approach to insomnia & sleeping problems. It's not pills or herbs:

I know that you may think it's temporary but it may be signs of a sleeping disorder. Your mind not shutting down can be a sign of insomnia. Check this site out & learn a little about it.

Are you drinking alcohol? This is the biggest contributory factor to sleep loss known to man. If not, then are you eating much food or drinking too much coffee before going to bed?

Try melatonin, it's a hormone that regulates your biological clock. You can usually find it anywhere that sells vitamins or natural remedies.
