It depends on the conversation. If its a topic involving child abuse, and the person I'm talking with is also a survivor of child abuse, I will hold that conversation with them. If its a conversation on the degree of responsibility of grown children to take care of their eldery parents, I will also relay that information.
Child abuse is survivable. We do not have to follow that same path and, we can also put the blame where it belongs - on the abuser.
I still love my mother, but I am not responsible for the decisions that she has made or how her life has come to be what it is now. She had no room for me in her life then...I have no room in my life for her now.

I wasn't abused but I think if I was and felt the need to tell someone I would make sure it was someone I trusted and would not run away if I told them. I don't think there is a "line" to use, it's whatever you are feeling and whatever you want the person to know.

I do take offense to your question, because I was abused as a child, horribly abused, and this is something that rips my heart out:~) I don't make excuses for who I am.
Do you really think it's easy living with something like that?
Do you think it's a ploy for attention?
I am hurt that someone could be so cold as to think that

i don't really understand you're question that much "what is the line". But no! i would never tell no one i was beat or abused. But if i was abused or beaten i would, but i never was. I wouldn't lie about it.

No you don't !
People are interested to know about the bad things that happened to you because it makes good conversation fodder (as in gossip). And the abuse if your personal tragedy so why do you want people to know about all your hardships ?
If you are looking for sympathy, I am sure you will get good lip service.
I would not even disclose something like this to my spouse.

No, I wasn't beaten or abused. So there is no reason to say that I was.
