It seems to be happening. The laws of this country are ignored and broken, the courts are stacked with sympathizers, the rules are aimed to enrich huge corporations, while the people are left bereft, with either low-paying jobs or no jobs. The people fortunate enough to have good jobs are shaking in their boots because of downsizing and layoffs. Middle class people are losing their homes and sinking into poverty.

The young people of our country are the immediate victims. Their futures are bleak, educational costs are exorbitant, with interest rates so high, they will face a lifetime of debt. The National Debt has soared, thus assuring them of a huge tax burden in the future. While they seem to support the aggression and the feeling of power that being of rich country gives them, they are the unwitting victims of our country's lapse into a form of insanity. They just do not grasp the issues.

At the same time, our leaders give themselves imperial powers, powers that overreach our Constitutional laws and do not protect the civil rights of the people, the guarrantee of equality for all, the habeas corpus rights to equal justice. The balance of powers, judicial, legislative and executive, has been sneered upon, giving the executive branch supreme authority. Vetos and Signing Statements have assured our leadership control over every decision, our money has been wasted in war, and illegal immigration has given big business a plentiful supply of cheap labor, while bringing down the income of the American Middle Class.

Fear has been used as a weapon, religion used as a political club. We haven't quite reached dictatorship yet, but we're heading down that path.

Most dictators came to power by being elected democratically, then they abused their power and turned it into a dictatorship. Take Hitler, for ex, his party was elected to be in power over the communists and he took away the people's individual rights during wartime. So yes, I think someone would be perfectly capable. They would though, have to make a few purges and eliminate political opponents.
