To be perfectly honest, no one is ever going to be able to pronounce that. I would have said "Tiger-Knock." It's definitely unique, and not something I would do, but if you like the name that much, you might want to try a pronounceable version.

I don't mind the name Teer-ney, but nobody is going to pronounce Tigernach like that. I would find another way to spell it so it can be pronounced correctly. You don't want your girl to have to correct everyone for the rest of her life and have to tell people how to spell her name.

Traditionally it is spelled Tierney.... I've NEVER seen that variation in all the name books I've read and looked up online. "Tierney" means "noble" or "lord" in Irish/Gaelic. And Tigernach is no where near anything Irish. The only alternate spelling I've seen is "Tierneigh."

It's a pretty name if you spell it properly. It's not very common in America, though I've known one girl with the name.

Unless you live in a Celtic community, go for a more traditional spelling. Otherwise people will call them Tiger-knack or Tiger-knock.

Also, research proves a child with an unusual name rank lower in education and professions. How would you like to hire "Tigernach"? Think about adult years. If it's too unusual your child will just have to pay money in the adult years to have it spelled traditionally.

Tierney is Teer-ney. Tigernach will always be pronounced incorrectly as Tiger-Knock.

I think you would be doing a child a huge disservice by naming her that. Please, I beg you, do not do that to that poor baby.

Although, Tigernach is a Celtic/Gaelic name meaning lord, I ask you to reconsider the spelling. Tierney is of the same origin and has the same meaning as Tigernach.

Tierney is a beautiful name.

The first thing that popped into my head, was seeinga teacher calling out atendence...if you saw Tigernach would you pronounce it as Teer-Ney? I don't like it just for the simple fact that your kid will be tormented with it throught school.....Not trying to be mean, but thats my opinion!

Like the other responses said, no. Just don't do that to your daughter. Tierney is a pretty spelling that would actually be likely to be pronounced correctly.

No offense or anything, but no one is going to be able to pronounce that name. I wouldn't even begin to know how to say it. If you want that to be her name, why don't you try spelling it a different way. Try spelling it that way it sounds. Don't get crazy with the spelling, it will only make it harder on the baby.

Huh?
How do you get "Teer-ney" from Tigernatch?
Oh, that's bad. Bad, bad, bad. Kids will be calling her "Tiger snatch." Not good.

Surely you can come up with something better.

Oh good grief - just spell it better. Tiger-nach is not Tierney. ( I don't care if that is the Gaelic spelling. but I don't think it is) Spell it Tierney - she'll thank you and won't have kids teasing her calling her tiger and roaring at her every time a teacher mispronounces her name.
