It all depends on which thumb the pain was in, if it was the one holding the nail chances are you hit it with a hammer or you drove the nail into an electric cable - but that would've hurt a finger as well.
If it was the thumb which was holding the hammer then it may have been a splinter or defect in the metal/rubber poking out into your thumb or could've just had simple cramp.
If you need further advice - you can call or email NHS direct or if you feel really brave you can brave the A&E dept. Keep a straight face and pretend you are really serious and see what they say.

It will take a few days.

get a mate round to help, you hold the nail & he holds the hammer, tell him when you nod your head... he hits it with the hammer................ im sure you'll be ok
